Stephen Frears may not be entirely comfortable as an Oscar nominee. Lucy Gray remembers a conversation with him — back in 1985 — when he was focused on keeping his production costs down and his financial expectations about the same. Since then, things have changed a little, but a recent check-in with the director of such films as Dangerous Liaisons and The Grifters (as well as this year’s Oscar-nominated The Queen) gave Lucy the impression that nice-guy Frears isn’t all that motivated by the award

These movie discussions with Lucy Gray are wonderful.
Intimate in tone without being overly familiar, Lucy provides an inside look at aspects of movies that are rarely discussed.
She is great at giving one a sense of a true flesh and blood individual behind the screen.
I like the exploration of the creative process that is touched upon in these interviews.
I’d like to see more pieces by her.
Thanks

What a charming and revealing anecdote about S. Frears that one might never hear except possibly in a posthumous biography. Lucy, you are doing a great service to one who loves the process of making films and the (fragile!) humanity of those who who are devoted to their craft.
Thank you for taking us so intimately into that world.
